Our inaugural conference compels the central questions of our next endeavor: Before
the Crisis Breaks: Conflict Prevention, Crisis Management and Preventive Diplomacy in the 21st Century. The 2007 Peace and Conflict Conference will examine the indicators, proximate triggers, and dynamics of crisis escalation in order to assess what can be done to prevent complex emergencies from descending into human catastrophes. Delegates will analyze a diverse breadth of case studies in order to understand the tools of prevention and management in three distinct but overlapping contexts: civil war, international conflict and humanitarian crisis.

Bringing together top theorists and high-level practitioners to analyze past and present examples, the conference will develop a set of practical principles to guide leaders through the crises of tomorrow.

For itinerary and registration information, download the PDF.
www.peaceandconflictsociety.ca

End of Term Social @ Rower's Pub

Stressed out? The School's mission is to educate students to make a difference in the public, private and community sectors and to help shape dynamic and innovative public policy at the local, regional, national and international levels. With the
expertise and participation of leading researchers from faculties and departments across the University, and public policy experts and practitioners from a broad range of sectors, the School will build knowledge networks and bring original thinking to increasingly complex national and global issues.

The Masters of Public Policy Program (MPP)

The School will fulfill its education mandate through a new professional degree program, the Masters of Public Policy (MPP), which pending approval by the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies and the University of Toronto Governing Council, plans to accept applications in early Winter 2007 with courses starting in September
2007. The 20-month MPP will accept a select group of 20 students per year and offers four semesters of course and project work with a summer policy internship in government or at a local, national or international agency. Students will have the opportunity to pursue a specialization in either Social and Economic Policy or Global Public Policy and within these fields will be able to select courses that
span a range of sectors including, for example, health, education, cities and immigration.

A hallmark of the School is that each cohort will work and learn together to develop the analytical tools and critical thinking that will prepare them to tackle a range of `real life' public policy issues, both those that are essential to policy makers today, and those that will emerge in the future. The program size and structure
will allow each student to customize an education using the full breadth of resources that only U of T can offer through the many faculty and departments that have partnered to build and create this unique multi-disciplinary model of learning and excellence at the School.

The Outreach Program

Situated in Toronto and the GTA, the MPP program and the School's parallel outreach programming are designed to readily connect government, business, professional and community sector leaders, and international visitors with students and faculty so that learning is grounded in both theory and practice.

The School is developing an exciting lineup of conferences, symposia, seminars and events, drawing on the research expertise of our faculty, as well as benefiting from policy scholars from around the world. Our research and related events are designed to help contribute to rigorous policy development and discussions across many areas of expertise, both in Canada and internationally. As one measure of the success of these partnership discussions to date, the School is hosting events this fall in conjunction with the following:

·Ontario Ministries of Health and Long term Care, Finance and Cabinet Office –a two-day conference, Social Insurance for Health Care, November 9, 10, 2006
·Federal Blue Ribbon Panel on Grants and Contributions –a symposium on Partnering for Public Purpose, November 22, 2006

Information and registration for these events is available at: www.publicpolicy.utoronto.ca/events. This may include, but is not limited to, postering around campus, making announcements in relevant 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year courses and other student organizations. Student reps would also be expected to be a liaison to other students around the university, which may be through other student clubs, through different colleges, or through the student public on the internet.Students reps are also expected to attend different IRS events that are hosted through the year. The IRS is asking that the student reps are available to assist in the promotion of the IRS and its events throughout the entire year. These positions are not executive positions on the IRS, so student reps will not be expected to attend meetings, etc.

Interested students should write a letter which is no longer than 1 page, explaining why they are suitable for the position. Some examples may include previous PR experience, current or past involvement with other student organizations and clubs, or just a strong desire to get involved with the IRS.Applicants are asked to make a title page which include their college, their year of study and their program of study. These posts are open to every undergrad student in every academic discipline so long as he/she has an interest in the different aspects of international relations. Good communication skills are a must!

Completed applications, and any other queries regarding the positions, should be directed to Colum Grove-White, the Public Relations Director, at colum.grove.white@internationalrelations.ca.
